11. Defining Yourself As a Writer

Instruction in writing — a weekend seminar, a weekly study group, a university course — can help you organize your approach to writing and help you gain confidence in your ability as a writer. Begin with the faith that you have something unique to say and move into trying to say it. You may find that you already have the tools of the writing craft that you need to express yourself. Or you may find that you need more information about how to use words, how to form sentences, and how to present your ideas on paper. You might need writing practice, the process of writing day after day, until you can bring your ideas to the paper easily and without great frustration.

No one can teach you inspiration and no one can teach you the innate compulsion that writers have to get their ideas on paper, but others can help you with the tools you need to do this. You can become more skillful with practice and with instruction. Most of the craft of writing can be taught. And, with increased skills often comes increased confidence. With a greater faith in yourself comes greater production and you will begin to fulfill your vision of yourself as a writer. At some point, when someone asks what you “do,” you will answer automatically and confidently say, “I’m a writer.”
